🎱 Farewell to a Snooker Legend 🎱

The World Snooker Championship kicked off on a bittersweet note this year at the Crucible Theatre with tributes pouring in for the late John Virgo. Known fondly as the ‘Voice of Snooker,’ Virgo passed away at the age of 79 in February while at his home in Spain.

As applause filled the iconic Sheffield venue, legendary players like Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry fought back tears, showcasing just how much Virgo meant to the snooker world. Hazel Irvine led a heartwarming tribute on live TV, echoing the sentiments of many: “John was universally loved…he really was the voice of snooker.”
An emotional video tribute set the stage, followed by a heartfelt round of applause to honour Virgo’s enduring legacy. Announcer Rob Walker captured the essence of the moment, noting, “It’s as if he’s about to walk into the arena at any minute.”
Earlier tributes for Virgo saw the snooker community gather at Sheffield Cathedral. Legends such as Jimmy White, John Parrott, and Dennis Taylor came together alongside Virgo’s family to honour the man who, in Davis’s words, was part of “snooker’s furniture.”
Virgo’s impact on the sport was unmatched, having won the 1979 UK Championship and later becoming a cherished commentator. His vibrant personality and unique commentary style will always be remembered. As Parrott poignantly added, John is now “in the great commentary box in the sky.”
Missed but never forgotten, Virgo’s legacy continues to inspire a new generation of snooker fans and players alike. 💙 #SnookerLegend #JohnVirgo #WorldSnookerChampionship
