Heartbreaking news out of Preston Crown Court. Jamie Varley, branded a heartless baby-killer, showed no emotion as he was sentenced to life in prison for the tragic death of 13-month-old Preston Davey. Despite dramatic behaviour when Preston was rushed to the hospital in July 2023, Varley remained stoic as details of the horrific crimes were revealed.

Ditching the suit he wore during the trial, Varley appeared dishevelled, seemingly casting aside any pretense of remorse. During the seven-week trial, the jury witnessed his shifting emotions on CCTV and police footage. In interviews, he claimed innocence, turning emotions on and off while contradicting expert evidence.

The court heard heart-wrenching statements from Preston’s mother, Sarah Davey, who spoke of her love for the baby from the moment he was born, describing how his smile lit up any room. Yet, pain fills those memories, knowing what Preston endured. She stated, “He was innocent, defenceless, and relied on you – the adults – to keep him safe.”
Preston’s father, Gary Nolan, expressed the pain of not meeting his son, while foster parents Sandra and Paul Cooper shared how Preston’s death changed their lives, driving them to continue fostering other vulnerable children in Preston’s memory.
As the guilty verdicts for murder, cruelty, and indecent images were read, Varley’s lack of response indicated his emotions might have been a facade all along. Meanwhile, John McGowan-Fazakerley, also present during proceedings, showed no remorse or emotion.
This tragic tale serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities adults have to protect the innocent and the devastating impact of failing to do so. Rest in peace, little Preston. 🌟
