🚍 Big Changes, Big Issues! 🚍

School transport in Rhondda Cynon Taf has undergone major changes, and it’s stirring up quite the storm! 😰 Starting September 2025, only students living more than three miles from their school get free transport. This has left many using public buses, and the impact is clear!

Reports are flooding in about bullying on public transport and students missing exams due to bus delays. Some students, particularly those with additional learning needs, are finding public buses a daunting experience, with some even avoiding school altogether. 📚🥺

Councillor Cathy Lisles expressed deep concern over these issues, highlighting the stress faced by children and the emotional toll. She hopes future reports will address these challenges head-on.
Despite facing a £35 million budget gap, the council insists they’re still providing extensive transport services, in line with the government’s requirements. Yet, with around 2,300 students losing free rides to school from September 2025, the community is feeling the squeeze. 😱
The council has rolled out a £1 bus scheme for younger students and created a hardship fund to help families cope. Plus, they’re working on reducing student fares with Transport for Wales. Still, these efforts seem to fall short for some families with multiple children.
Councillor Sera Evans argues that RCT should adopt a more generous transport policy, acknowledging the non-financial burdens on families. The debate continues as everyone hopes for solutions that will prevent barriers to kids getting their education.
