Women are keeping their successes under wraps to remain ‘likeable’, according to a new study. The findings show that many women feel pressured to seem modest, with four in ten more comfortable celebrating others’ achievements than their own.

A survey of 2,000 adults reveals that almost a quarter of women often downplay their accomplishments. What’s more, 36% have deleted or decided against posting about their successes online. Although only 6% feel comfortable sharing their wins on social media, those who do often soften their message before hitting ‘post’. A whopping 42% believe that when women celebrate their achievements publicly, they get judged more harshly than men.

This insight comes from the Unhumble Project, spearheaded by Galaxy Chocolate, which aims to help women confidently speak about their accomplishments. As part of this campaign, comedian Rachel Parris has been performing in King’s Cross, encouraging women to proudly share their victories. According to Rachel, women are accustomed to downplaying their success and this initiative is about changing the narrative to ‘say it plainly and proudly’.

Some of the success stories women are beginning to share include becoming one of the first female drag queens, securing better-paid jobs after redundancy, and learning new skills like playing the ukulele during lockdown.
Shockingly, the study also shows that there’s a societal expectation for women to be modest about their achievements. Around 63% of women feel this way, while 72% have chosen not to share personal achievements in the past. Yet, over half believe that being more open could positively impact their lives.
Romi Mackiewicz of Galaxy and Claire Reindorp from the Young Women’s Trust highlight the importance of changing this modesty norm. They advocate for women to confidently say ‘I did that’, arguing that sharing success can inspire others and lead to further career progression.
