🏠 **Bridgend Housing Crisis Alert!** 🏠

Bridgend residents are feeling the squeeze with a massive rise in people waiting for a place to call home. The housing demand here has surged, thanks to the soaring cost of living and a challenging private rental market.

📊 **The Numbers**:
In 2019, there were just 83 households in temporary accommodation. Fast forward to January 2026, and that number has jumped to 296! Even more striking, single-person households now make up 75% of those in temporary housing.
🗣️ At a recent council meeting, it was revealed that the Bridgend Common Housing Register has seen a staggering increase – from 816 households in 2019-20 to around 3,500 by early 2026. The report highlights the cost-of-living crisis and hurdles in the private rental sector as major contributors.
💡 **Council’s Response**:
Despite the hurdles, council leader John Spanswick commended efforts to cut down service costs by approximately 21%, or £1m. Recent council property purchases are aiding this mission, and there’s a capital programme aimed at boosting affordable housing options.
🏘️ **Future Plans**:
The council plans to buy three more properties over the next year. Agreements with guesthouses, holiday lets, and other properties are on the table to help tackle immediate housing pressures. Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Neelo Farr mentioned, “This ensures vulnerable people have safe, suitable accommodation as we work on long-term solutions.”
Bridgend is working hard to address these housing challenges, but it’s clear that more affordable homes are desperately needed. What are your thoughts on this ongoing issue? Share your views in the comments! 🤔🏡
