In a troubling trend, the number of high-risk domestic violence referrals in a Welsh council has surged by over 50% in the last five years. Gary Black from Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council shared these alarming stats, pointing out a 52% rise since 2021. While an increase was anticipated during COVID-19, the numbers have continued to climb, highlighting a national crisis we cannot ignore.

Despite these challenges, there is hope. In the past year, 130 high-risk victims have completed support packages delivered by the council, with 95% reporting feeling safer after intervention. This remarkable progress underscores the power of targeted support and collaboration.

Overall, RCT has seen a “positive trajectory” in reducing violence with injury, while unfortunately, violence without injury, often linked to online harassment and stalking, has increased. This trend mirrors the national picture and emphasises the urgent need to address online safety issues.

Rising hate crimes, though a slight 1.2% bump, remain a concern. Continued proactive efforts are essential to combat these trends and ensure safer communities.
