Following a surprise visit, inspectors have flagged serious issues at a mental health hospital in Cardiff. The recently released report highlights shocking conditions including furniture with faecal stains, suspected blood on a wall, and strong odours—all found by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.
The inspection covered wards treating patients over 65, many with dementia or severe mental health conditions. Conditions on these wards and communal areas were found to be far from “safe or therapeutic,” impacting the dignity and comfort of the patients.

In response to the alarming report, Natasha Asghar MS, Shadow Minister for Health and Social Care, stressed that failures in leadership and housekeeping must be urgently addressed. “Families need reassurances that these shortcomings are being tackled,” she stated.
The health board is taking action, outlining plans for deep cleaning, safety improvements, and strengthened oversight. Continuous monitoring will ensure these improvements are carried through.
