Police say the aftermath of the football celebrations on Monday evening was marred by chaos, after a vehicle ploughed into crowds gathered on Water Street. A total of 79 people, ranging in age from as young as nine to as old as 78, sustained injuries. Seven of those victims remain under hospital care as they recover from what authorities have described as a traumatic and distressing episode.

Doyle has been charged with multiple offences, including two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, and one count of dangerous driving. He is currently being held in custody as investigations continue.

At a press briefing on Thursday, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police addressed the media, recognising the deep shock and concern reverberating throughout the local community. “As we work to support all those impacted by the appalling events that occurred during Liverpool Football Club’s celebratory parade, our thoughts remain with them,” she remarked. “This week has been challenging for everyone involved, and our priority is to ensure that justice is served for those affected.”

Authorities emphasise that detectives continue to methodically review evidence collected in the wake of the incident. This includes an enormous cache of footage from public submissions—CCTV recordings, mobile phone videos, and dashcam sequences—alongside material captured by officers’ own body-worn cameras. Assistant Chief Constable Sims extended her gratitude to members of the public, many of whom have come forward to aid investigators with statements and crucial evidence. She also urged anyone who has yet to make contact with police, but who may have important information, to do so through the relevant channels.

Further details have emerged suggesting the driver was able to enter Water Street due to a temporary removal of a road block. Emergency crews had lifted the barrier momentarily to permit access for an ambulance responding to a separate medical emergency nearby. According to a police spokesperson, traffic was otherwise being diverted via Exchange Street with physical barriers in place, including a flatbed truck and traffic cones.

As the criminal process unfolds, police have appealed for calm and requested that the public refrain from speculation – especially online – which could compromise ongoing legal proceedings. “We ask that people respect the process and allow the case to be handled by the courts,” added Assistant Chief Constable Sims.

In a heartening display of solidarity, the local community and sporting world have come together in support of those hurt during the crash. A fundraising initiative set up in the wake of the tragedy has so far garnered more than £30,000 to assist victims and their families. Notably, the Jamie Carragher 23 Foundation, established by the former Liverpool player, contributed a significant £10,000.

This incident marks a sombre moment during what should have been a celebration for Liverpool FC fans and the city as a whole. As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting those affected, bringing clarity to how the incident unfolded, and ensuring justice is pursued for all those involved. The extensive police investigation, strengthened by substantial public cooperation, is expected to continue in the coming weeks.

For now, attention turns to the legal proceedings, with Paul Doyle scheduled to make his first court appearance. The city, meanwhile, grapples with the consequences of an event that has left a lasting mark on both individuals and the wider Liverpool community.
