Angela Rayner Cleared by HMRC Over Tax Controversy 🚫💷

Angela Rayner, former UK Deputy Prime Minister, can breathe a sigh of relief as HMRC clears her of deliberate wrongdoing in a tax investigation. This comes after a turbulent period involving underpayment of Stamp Duty on a property purchase that ultimately led to her resignation.

In 2024 and 2025, Rayner faced scrutiny for underpaying ÂŁ40,000 in stamp duty on an ÂŁ800,000 flat in Hove. Complications arose from her 25% stake in her family home, which was placed in a trust for her disabled son. Although she believed her tax payment was accurate based on legal advice, allegations emerged suggesting otherwise.
Despite the storm, HMRC has now concluded that Rayner acted without intent to mislead, chalking it up to complex tax law provisions rather than a deliberate attempt to dodge taxes. Her full repayment of the ÂŁ40k stands as the only financial action taken against her.
Rayner, the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, expressed her relief, stating the issue had “clipped her wings.” As Sir Keir Starmer’s future comes into question, Rayner’s newfound clarity could pave the way for her leadership ambitions. While she hasn’t ruled out participating in any Labour leadership race, she emphasised her commitment to delivering change over personal ambition.
With her tax affairs settled, could Rayner be looking at a political comeback? Only time will tell! ⏳🔄
