π¨ Important Update from HMRC for Pensioners! π¨

Hey everyone! If you’re retired and receiving a pension, listen up! HMRC has given some clarity on how tax codes work for pensioners, and it might save you a lot of hassle!
Recently, some folks have been worried about being charged more tax than usual. A concerned pensioner reached out to HMRC on social media to ask about “emergency tax charges”. HMRC replied with some helpful info:

πΉ Up to 25% of your pension withdrawals are tax-free.
πΉ The other 75% is taxed as income, which can be at 20% (basic rate), 40% (higher rate), or 45% (additional rate), depending on your income bracket.
Now, what’s this “emergency tax” thing? π€ HMRC explained it’s a temporary, cautious measure. If they donβt have all your income info yet, they use a provisional code to make sure you’re not underpaying tax.
Here’s what you need to know:
π If you think your tax code might be wrong, don’t worry! You can check and update it through your personal tax account on the GOV.UK website.
π Not internet-savvy? No problem. Just ring HMRC on 0300 200 3300, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm for help.
Being on an emergency tax code can mean you pay taxes based on each individual payment, rather than your overall annual income. So double-check your tax code to ensure you’re not overpaying.
Stay informed, and make sure you’re only paying what you owe! π·
