Planning a holiday getaway? Don’t forget about your home! An expert has shared top tips to keep your house safe and energy-efficient while you’re off making memories.

First on the list: unplug those power-sucking devices. You may not realise it, but gadgets like kettles, air fryers, laptops, and TVs can still draw power even when not in use! By unplugging them, you not only reduce energy waste but also cut the risk of electrical faults. Plus, it’s a simple way to protect your beloved tech from potential power surges.

However, keep your fridge-freezer and Wi-Fi router running. Your router uses minimal electricity, and turning it off might disable smart devices that keep your home secure. Martin Garbutt, an electrical safety expert, suggests freezing a small container of water with a coin on top to check for any power cuts. Upon your return, if the coin has sunk into the ice, your freezer might have thawed.
And don’t forget the water supply! It’s a good idea to switch off your stopcock to avoid any leaks from taps or washing machines. Remember, turning the handle clockwise (righty tighty) will close it off, and turning the nearest cold tap lets the remaining water out, ensuring your pipes won’t burst while you’re away.
Lastly, adjust your heating system. In the warmer months, there’s no need for your heating to run full throttle. But if you’re heading out during the chilly season, keep the thermostat at a low temperature to prevent frozen pipes. Smart thermostats offer handy ‘Holiday Mode’ settings to keep things easy-breezy.
Safe travels, and enjoy peace of mind knowing your home is well-prepared! 🏡✈️🌍
