Tristan Roberts, an 18-year-old from Prestatyn, shocked the nation when he asked AI how to commit murder before brutally killing his mum, Angela Shellis. Using a hammer, Tristan carried out the attack and even recorded it on a dictaphone. Mold Crown Court heard that he later bragged about his horrific actions online.

The court was told that Tristan had disturbing discussions on Discord, sharing his twisted thoughts and expressing hatred towards women. He outlined his plans to harm his mother and sought advice from an AI search engine on the best weapon for murder. Despite the AI refusing to help initially, it later advised him that a hammer would be more effective for someone untrained.

On the night of the attack, Tristan recorded himself, referencing TV serial killer Dexter, before launching his assault. Sadly, Angela, a 45-year-old teaching assistant known for her caring nature, tried to reach out for help for her son, expressing concerns about his mental health just days before the tragedy. She was found the next morning by walkers in a local nature reserve.

Tristan has now been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 22 years and six months. The court heard heart-wrenching statements from Angela’s family. Her sister spoke of anger and heartbreak, yet also a lingering care for Tristan. Angela’s dedication to her sons was highlighted—she had fought tirelessly for them despite life’s challenges.
Angela’s bravery that night was recognised by Detective Superintendent Andrew Gibson, who praised her courage in such a terrifying situation. The case, which has deeply affected the local community, has been referred to the North Wales Safeguarding Board to examine what more could have been done.
