From teenage experimentation to a prison sentence—how did life go so off track for one Newport man? Niall Wilding, now 24, first started using drugs at just 13 years old. By 16, he was turning to cocaine. Fast forward several years, and he’s faced Newport Crown Court with charges that have landed him over three years in prison.

On October 29, police cornered Wilding near Blackett Avenue after he tried to flee. He was caught with two bags under his jacket, packed with 148.1g of heroin, 25.6g of cocaine, and a small stash of cannabis. Oh, and he had £3,520 in cash on him! The drugs were valued between £9,990 and £15,960 in total. Wilding has pleaded guilty to possessing class A drugs with intent to supply, possession of class B drugs, and having criminal property. With six prior convictions, including drug trafficking, this wasn’t his first brush with the law.

His backstory is full of challenges—placed into care at 14 after his parents’ divorce and buried under debt from his drug habits. His lawyer described him as merely a “pawn in a bigger game.” It’s reported that Wilding has now stopped using class A drugs, but it’s a pity it took reaching this point for changes to be made.
