Helena Charles, a remarkable woman who has lived through two world wars, recently celebrated her 107th birthday in Wales. Born in 1918 on Marion Street in Blaengarw, Helena, also known as Lena, has had a life filled with extraordinary experiences. Her upbringing in a different era saw her father, a talented organist, pass away when she was young, leaving her mother to raise her. Lena’s stepfather, a skilled elocutionist, nurtured her love for music and words. The family connections extended beyond Wales, with one of her brothers moving to Canada, a bond Lena cherished by visiting him well into her 80s.

Lena and her husband Bert Charles raised four children and were deeply committed to their community. They worked tirelessly with the British Legion Poppy Appeal until Bert’s illness made it challenging to continue. Lena then dedicated herself to caring for him during his long illness. During World War II, Lena worked at Bridgend Arsenal, contributing to the war effort by bringing morale-boosting items to the local hospital. Her compassion extended post-war as she volunteered with Meals on Wheels, ensuring the elderly received hot meals. Her 40-year service with the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service earned her the Wales and West Local Hero award and the British Empire Medal.

Even in her later years, Lena continued to give back by setting up a knitting circle to make blankets for children in need. Her dedication to health, moderation in all things, and mental agility, doing word searches, have been her keys to longevity. Her family describes her as caring and sociable, always prioritising others. In a humorous anecdote shared by her daughter Gillian, Lena’s calmness prevailed even in a situation where she was unexpectedly diverted during a flight to Canada, causing a brief panic amongst her loved ones.
Lena’s 107th birthday celebration at Bryn Celyn Care Home in Maesteg was a testament to her impact on her family, friends, and the community. She embodies kindness, resilience, and community spirit, traits that have been recognised through various awards and honours over the years. Lena’s legacy is one of selflessness and service, inspiring all who have had the privilege to know her. Her story serves as a living testament to the power of compassion and dedication, making her truly a shining example to us all.
As Lena continues to cherish each day, her commitment to helping others and fostering strong community bonds remains unwavering. Her lifetime of achievements and unwavering spirit stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who cross her path. Lena’s 107th birthday not only marks a milestone in years but also symbolises a lifetime dedicated to making a positive impact on the world around her. Her story reminds us of the resilience and strength that resides within us all, waiting to be ignited by acts of kindness and service to others.
