A small Welsh town is on a magical quest to secure a piece of literary history! Crickhowell is buzzing with excitement as locals rally to raise funds for a special letter from none other than J.R.R. Tolkien, the legendary author of The Lord of the Rings.

This letter, which is heading for auction with a price tag of £5,000 to £7,000, holds a unique connection to the residents. In it, Tolkien reveals that the fictional location “Crickhollow” in his famed series was inspired by Crickhowell. How amazing is that?

The letter, dated February 1966, is a charming response to a reader named Jenny Hall, where Tolkien shares his fondness for Welsh names and their role in his epic tales. It’s a slice of history that links the enchanting landscapes of Wales to the realms of Middle-earth.
Frank Ady, a passionate Crickhowell local and business owner, has launched a fundraising campaign to help secure this literary gem. With a target of £2,200, Frank hopes to bring the letter home, so it can be displayed for both residents and visitors to enjoy the town’s special Tolkien connection.
Frank shared, “We’ve all heard stories of Tolkien enjoying his holidays in Crickhowell, with our town sparking his creativity for places and characters in his books. Now, with this letter up for grabs, it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that heritage.”
So far, the community has gathered nearly £1,000. If you love the Shire and its fascinating tales, you can be part of this story by donating to the cause!
