Tragedy in Bacup – A heartfelt story of love, care, and an unfortunate accident. David Wilson, a beloved father and husband, passed away in a devastating garage fire. After being diagnosed with spinocerebellar syndrome in 2014, David, a former wagon driver, had to rely on a wheelchair. Despite his mobility challenges, he never lost his love for agricultural machinery and enjoyed working on his small tractor at home.

On a fateful day in November, David was left in his garage to tinker with his tractor while his wife Karen tended to household chores. Unfortunately, his wheelchair got too close to a gas heater, resulting in a fire. Despite Karen’s efforts to save him, David succumbed to smoke inhalation and burns.
An inquest revealed that while the bungee cord used to keep David secure in his wheelchair may have hindered his escape, it was unlikely to have contributed to the ignition. David’s brother, Stephen, shared memories of a caring elder brother who became a father figure after their dad’s sudden death.

David leaves behind a loving family, including his mother, sisters, daughter, and countless nieces and nephews. Known for his love of music by Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and his fondness for fixing cars, David’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Let’s cherish our loved ones and remain mindful of the dangers that everyday items can pose, especially when caring for those with additional needs. Remembering David’s story, we hold his family in our thoughts and prayers.
