Tragic Accident in North Sea: Newport Man Falls Through Oil Rig Deck

In a heart-wrenching incident, Newport resident Jason Thomas, 50, lost his life after falling through a missing deck grate on an oil rig in the North Sea. Working aboard the Valaris 121, Jason was last seen with a cup of coffee and his mobile, before a loud noise alarmed his colleagues. Despite efforts, his body was never recovered.

The heartbreaking event led to an extensive investigation by the Health and Safety Executive. It concluded that Ensco Offshore UK Limited, the company operating the rig, failed to meet safety standards, resulting in a £267,000 fine. Simple precautions could have potentially prevented this tragedy, according to investigators.

Weather on that fateful day was atrocious, with wind speeds over 30 mph and fierce waves battering the rig. Unfortunately, the grating wasn’t secured as per original specs, leading to its dislodgement and creating the deadly hole that Jason fell through.
Adding to the family’s grief, Jason’s mother passed away soon after receiving his presumed death certificate. The Chief Inspector involved noted this was a deeply impactful tragedy on both Jason’s colleagues and community.
Post-tragedy, Ensco Offshore has replaced all polymer gratings with galvanised steel to ensure safety.
Let this serve as a critical reminder about workplace safety, urging companies to prioritize secure, well-maintained environments for their employees. Our thoughts are with Jason’s family and friends during this difficult time.
