**Tragic Incident in Pontypool: Man Dies After Choking on Milkshake**

In a heart-wrenching incident, 74-year-old Raymond Lewis sadly passed away after choking on a milkshake at his care home near Pontypool. On January 3, Mr. Lewis, who lived at The Retreat in Abersychan since 2017, experienced a sudden coughing fit while having a prescribed milkshake. Despite the quick response from carers to assist him, Mr. Lewis collapsed shortly after and was unable to recover.

An inquest revealed he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and autism but was not considered at risk of choking. Unfortunately, after he began coughing, Mr. Lewis inhaled gastric contents, leading to airway blockage. The emergency services were called, but despite all efforts, he was pronounced dead at 7:04pm.
The post-mortem, conducted by Dr. James Harrison, confirmed the cause of death was the aspiration of gastric contents. Senior coroner, Caroline Saunders, ruled the death as misadventure, noting no omissions in the care provided.
