Tragic news from Belgium as a British cyclist sadly passed away after collapsing during the We Ride Flanders event, a popular amateur race held a day before the famed Tour of Flanders. The 51-year-old rider, reportedly cycling alongside his son, likely suffered a heart attack near the challenging Hotond climb and, despite medics’ swift response, couldn’t be revived.

Event organiser Gert van Goolen expressed deep regret, stating, “This is the last thing you want as an organisation.” Thousands participate in this event, which allows cycling enthusiasts to test themselves on the same challenging hills and cobbles the pros face. This year’s event saw two other riders hospitalised, including another Brit and a Dutch cyclist, both requiring emergency resuscitation.

In a heartbreaking twist, this isn’t the first tragedy at the event, as two participants, including ex-professional cyclist Stéphane Krafft, also lost their lives in last year’s race. With around 14,000 cyclists eager to conquer these legendary routes, these sobering incidents remind us of the risks involved in high-endurance sports.

Our thoughts are with the families affected by these unfortunate events. Stay safe and cherish every moment. 🖤🚴♂️
