🏊♀️ Holiday Horrors: Hot Tub Turns Deadly 😱

Celebrations turned tragic for Paulette Crookes, who passed away after a holiday hot tub stay went terribly wrong. Paulette, from the Isle of Wight, was enjoying a getaway with her family at a holiday cottage on the island to mark her 70th birthday. But things took a devastating turn when she contracted legionella from the hot tub, according to an inquest jury’s ruling.

Paulette spent a lot of time relaxing in the tub at Dairyman’s Cottage at Tapnell Farm, but soon after, she fell ill with symptoms that worsened rapidly. By the end of her holiday, she felt unwell, and things quickly escalated from there. Despite being treated at St Mary’s Hospital, Paulette sadly passed away in March 2020, with the cause of death being pneumonia caused by a legionella infection from the hot tub.
Family members reported a “strange smell” and “cloudy water” in the tub early into their stay, and post-holiday, several relatives also fell ill, including grandchildren who developed rashes. An investigation by Environmental Health was obstructed by the pandemic, leading to dissatisfaction among Paulette’s family over the outcome.
Despite assurances that routine tests were carried out on the hot tub, there remains uncertainty about whether protocols were genuinely followed during their stay. In light of these concerns, all hot tubs at the farm were removed by March 2020.
This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of proper maintenance and safety checks for shared facilities to prevent such life-threatening situations. Our thoughts remain with Paulette’s family during these trying times. 💔
