Tragic Tale: Nursing Dream Ends in Heartbreak

A serene sunset trip took a heart-wrenching turn when Helna Parathanam, a nursing student, lost her life in a crash. Helna and her friends, Diya Dolwin and Parvathi Selvaraj, enjoyed the sunset at Southerndown Beach but the journey home was marred by tragedy. Driver Jose John, navigating on too little sleep, lost control on the A48 in St Nicholas, leading to a catastrophic collision with a wall. Helna tragically passed away in hospital over a month later due to severe brain injuries.

Two other passengers, though seriously injured, have expressed they do not hold John responsible, acknowledging they all faced fatigue together. Helna had recently moved from India to pursue her nursing career and was cherished by her loved ones as an “adored daughter, sister and family member.”
Jose John, the driver, received a 12-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving. The court heard he is deeply remorseful, suffering from flashbacks and guilt. Helna’s friends continue to support one another, navigating their shared grief and trauma, holding onto cherished memories of their beloved friend.
This heartbreaking story is a powerful reminder of how quickly the unthinkable can happen. Our thoughts are with the families and friends navigating the aftermath of this devastating incident.
