After spending 10 days in a coma and enduring multiple injuries, including a shattered hip and a severe leg injury that led to the amputation of his right leg, Richard is now sharing his story. His aim? To encourage others to donate blood, especially with National Blood Donor Week on the horizon.

Richard’s survival is a testament to the exceptional efforts of the Welsh Blood Service and the quick actions of good Samaritans at the crash scene. A former Army medic managed to apply two makeshift tourniquets to control the bleeding, while others kept him awake until the Wales Air Ambulance arrived to administer critical care.

Reflecting on his miraculous recovery, Richard expresses deep gratitude for the kindness of strangers and the many donors whose blood saved his life. “At the time, I had no idea how many people it would take to save my life,” he says. “It’s overwhelming to think how many stepped forward to help me.”

During his recovery, he met his partner, Michaela, and they are now proud parents to a young son, Dougie. Richard has adapted to life with a prosthetic limb, secured a job with Dyfed-Powys Police, and bought a house. He continues to share his journey, hoping to inspire others to donate blood.

Alan Prosser of the Welsh Blood Service says, “In Richard’s case, it took a community of lifesavers. One donation can save three lives, and giving blood this summer can help people in their time of need, just like our donors helped Richard.”

Inspired by Richard’s incredible story? Consider donating blood and become part of this life-saving community. Let’s help others in need, one donation at a time!
