Uncovering the Surprising Link Between Heatwaves and Weight Gain – Not Just About Body Fat

Ever noticed the scale creeping up during a heatwave and wondered why? Surprise, it’s not fat! Turns out, as temperatures rise across the UK, so do our weight readings, but there’s no need to stress.

Personal trainer Sam Hayward, who has shed a whopping 17 stone himself, explains this quirk. During our current blazing heatwave, many folks find their weight fluctuating more than usual. Why? Because when we’re dehydrated and feeling the heat, our bodies think we’re in a drought. They kick into survival mode, releasing hormones like aldosterone to hold onto every drop of water we have. This hormone tells our kidneys to keep more water and sodium, resulting in a temporary jump on the scale.

This heat-triggered water weight will ease off once things cool down or our bodies adjust to the heat. Your hands, ankles, and tummy might even seem puffier as the summer sun causes blood vessels near the skin to dilate, pushing extra fluid into tissues. Add in our tendencies to dive into salty snacks or cocktails to cool off, and it’s no wonder we feel a bit more bloated than usual.

The good news is this is all temporary! Once the weather calms, so will your weight. So, if you find yourself a few pounds up, relax. It’s just a bit of extra water – nothing to worry about!

Stay hydrated, stay cool, and remember, as Sam says: “Once the weather resumes back to normal, you’ll be fine!” 🌞💧
