Imagine going to the hospital for a broken wrist and waking up to discover something completely unexpected—A BRAIN TUMOUR. That’s what happened to Alison Whybrow, 59, during what she thought was a routine hospital trip after a fall at home.

While at Royal Stoke University Hospital, Alison fainted from the pain of her wrist injury and was out cold for over six hours. This prompted doctors to run CT and MRI scans. The results? A 1.5mm low-grade meningioma behind her right eye, the most common type of adult brain tumour. Thankfully, it’s benign, but Alison now has yearly scans to keep an eye on things.

Her daughter, Hannah Munday, 29, shared her family’s emotional journey: “Without the broken arm, we’d never have known about mum’s brain tumour. Every Christmas we spend together now feels like a gift.”

Remarkably, Alison chose to keep this shocking diagnosis to herself at first, not wanting to worry Hannah and her stepdad, Darryl. Hannah only discovered the truth by overhearing a call with the doctor. “It was a relief to learn her situation is stable,” Hannah added.

In response, Hannah has stepped up as a warrior for awareness, working with Brain Tumour Research and their Xmas appeal. Letty Greenfield from the charity said, “Stories like Alison’s highlight how brain tumours can affect anyone. Hannah’s passion is inspiring and helps us in our mission to fund crucial research.”

Now Hannah is sharing hope with others, saying, “Mum is my best friend. I’m grateful for the research giving us hope. It means everything to families like mine.”
