An evening at Cardiff’s Royal Oak pub turned shockingly violent, leaving one man with a horrifying eye injury. Covie Hallam-Rose, alongside Molly Geoghegan and Jack Trigg, found themselves amid chaos after a night out spiralled out of control on April 2, 2023. A heated argument led to Hallam-Rose viciously pressing his thumb into Steven Nicholas’s eye—resulting in a loss of sight and several surgeries to repair a detached retina. Judge Williams condemned this “needless and cynical violence,” describing it as an outrageous display with no justification.

As tensions escalated, Geoghegan threw a drink and a glass in a fit of rage, while Hallam-Rose launched punches at a defenceless middle-aged woman who tried to intervene. Despite attempts to restrain the offenders, the group continued their spree, even throwing glasses and chairs at the pub after leaving.

In court, Hallam-Rose received a 27-month prison sentence for grievous bodily harm and affray. In contrast, Trigg received a suspended sentence, community service, and fine for attempting to pacify the situation but getting caught up in the violence. Geoghegan, a young mother, expressed deep remorse for her “out of character” actions, leading to her also receiving a suspended sentence and community orders. Phillip Kavanagh, initially trying to be a peacemaker, found himself swept up in the chaos, landing a suspended sentence and financial penalties.
This shocking incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a night out can turn catastrophic. Such acts of violence have lasting impacts not only on the victims but all those involved. Stay safe out there!
