🌟 From a Sore Throat to a Life-Altering Journey 🌟

Meet Lily McGarry, a dynamic Cardiff University medicine student and triathlete from Jersey. In January, Lily thought she had caught the flu—just a sore throat and cough. But days later, she found herself critically ill in the University Hospital of Wales with meningococcal septicaemia that developed into septic shock, leading to her becoming a quadruple amputee.

Lily’s world turned upside down, moving from running a 10k to fighting for her life in just 48 hours. Now, she’s on a determined road to recovery at Llandough Hospital, where she’s taking courageous steps in her rehabilitation journey.

Despite the challenges, Lily’s spirit shines bright, thanks to incredible support from healthcare professionals, family, and friends. Her family launched a GoFundMe campaign that’s rallied an astonishing £480,000 in donations—way above the initial target. These funds are crucial for her future, as a prosthetic leg alone can cost over £100,000.
Expressing her heartfelt gratitude, Lily is overwhelmed by the outpour of generosity from friends, strangers, and the communities in Cardiff and Jersey. From music concerts to cake sales, people have creatively supported her cause.
Lily is eager to get back home to Jersey, with dreams of owning a golden retriever and continuing her medical studies. She has a vital message for all students: keep an eye on each other’s well-being and know the signs of life-threatening conditions like sepsis, which can be mistaken for less serious illnesses.
Lily’s story is a powerful reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of being surrounded by love and support. Her journey is a testament to human resilience and the power of community. 💪❤️
Heroes of the day: her housemates spotted her alarming symptoms and rushed her to the hospital, saving her life. Know the six signs of sepsis: slurred speech, extreme shivering, passing no urine, severe breathlessness, a sense of impending doom, and mottled skin. 🌍💙
