Visitors to Talacre Beach, Flintshire, are doing a double-take thanks to a line of peculiar steel structures stretching across the sands. These aren’t a modern art installation but part of a “pipeline welding highway” linked to the massive HyNet project.

Some locals aren’t thrilled, calling the structures a “right eyesore.” But fear not—they’ll be dismantled come April!

So, what’s happening? Basically, a new pipeline is being built to channel captured carbon emissions (CO2) from North Wales and Northwest England to the Point of Ayr gas terminal. From there, the CO2 will head under the sea to old gas reservoirs in Liverpool Bay.

HyNet’s got big plans: the existing gas pipeline will be repurposed to transport CO2, while a new conduit will house electric and fibre-optic cables. These will support CO2 distribution while preserving the beautiful dunes with “trenchless” tech—installing cables without disturbing the landscape.

A cofferdam on the beach is temporarily containing drilling activities, with all set to be wrapped up by the end of August 2026. The beach’s footpath is partly closed, and some walkways are blocked by temporary barriers for safety. Don’t worry, all this action will leave no trace once done!

Excited to see it yourself? Keep an eye out but respect the “Keep Out” signs to stay safe. Soon enough, the beach will return to its pristine glory with no visible structures left behind. 🏖️

The project doesn’t end here! It’s part of a larger Carbon Capture and Storage initiative, involving a massive pipeline linking locations near Ellesmere Port to Flint. You’ll notice some traffic management in place as crews begin their work, and there are local info sessions if you’re curious to learn more!

Let’s make sure to share these insights with beachgoing pals so everyone’s in the loop. 🌟
