🌞🔥 Schools Closing During Heatwaves? Let’s Talk About It! 🔥🌞

With June’s scorching heatwave hitting record temperatures, many headteachers across Wales made the difficult call to close schools following an “extreme heat” warning from the Met Office. But this raised a big question: Should individual headteachers bear the responsibility for these tough decisions?

Monmouthshire’s own Cllr Paul Pavia raised the issue, noting the lack of a clear framework to guide schools during such weather events. He suggested that the Welsh Government should step in, possibly introducing a maximum indoor temperature guideline to help headteachers navigate these extreme situations. After all, it’s about ensuring our kids are safe and don’t miss out on valuable learning or vital free school meals.

On the flip side, Labour’s Laura Wright highlighted ongoing efforts to improve school infrastructure, with new buildings designed for energy efficiency and natural cooling—skipping the costly air conditioning. She agreed on the need for better guidelines, saying it makes sense to have temperature limits.
With climate change making extreme weather more common, it’s clear that schools need a plan. What do you think? Should there be more support and guidance for schools during heatwaves? 🤔
