A once bustling holiday haven, now eerily silent – the Pontins resort near Prestatyn is a ghost of its former glory. This iconic Welsh holiday park, which opened its doors in 1971, could host up to 3,500 guests, promising fun-filled days with its swimming pools, children’s play areas, and the famous Bluecoats’ entertainment. In 2011, the Britannia Hotel Group took over with plans to revive it to its former glory. However, it seems things didn’t go as planned. In November 2023, the park closed abruptly, leaving loyal guests and dedicated staff heartbroken and seeking answers.

Deserted chalets now line the coast, with only a modest team of security guards keeping watch over the empty grounds. Despite the site remaining well-maintained, Mother Nature is gradually taking its toll on the accommodation’s condition. Since the closure, whispers about the future of this sprawling leisure spot have been circulating, but Britannia has kept their cards close to their chest.

Local MP Becky Gittins is pressing Britannia for action, revealing discussions with another company about potentially investing to reopen the site as a family-friendly holiday park. While no deal is confirmed yet, there’s hope on the horizon. Britannia has assured that any future development will prioritise family holiday fun, quelling rumours of other uses for the site.
For the people of Prestatyn and countless fond visitors, patience remains key as they await the next chapter in Pontins’ story. With plans for redevelopment underway, it’s only a matter of time before the laughter of holidaymakers echoes across those quiet grounds once more.
