A dream holiday turned into a nightmare for Susan Martin, 69, when a scalding cup of tea spilled into her lap just 20 minutes into a flight to Malta. The Bournemouth grandma and her husband, Billy, were all set for a sunny getaway when the lid of a hot drink flipped off, sending boiling water cascading over Susan’s legs, stomach, and groin.

The in-flight accident left Susan screaming in agony and huddled in the crew area for the rest of the journey, where quick-thinking Ryanair staff applied gel packs and cold water to her burns. But upon landing, Susan was rushed to a Maltese hospital where her holiday plans changed to a week-long hospital stay, complete with daily bandage changes and IV antibiotics.

Her burns were so severe that they required medical attention even after she returned to the UK, with a dressing schedule that stretched over six weeks. Susan now carries the lifelong scars of this terrifying experience, needing to apply cream daily and avoid the sun to protect her healing skin.
Susan, from Weymouth, Dorset, is sharing her story to urge passengers to double-check that lids on hot drinks are secure and to be wary of their temperature on flights. She warns of the potentially dangerous consequences, especially for those flying with children.
Despite the ordeal, Susan has not received an apology from Ryanair, highlighting her concern that this situation doesn’t repeat itself with other passengers. She said, “If the water had spilled on a young child, it could have been even more horrendous.”
