Heartbreak at the Welsh Mountain Zoo 🐒💔
Visitors are being advised to prepare for a sensitive experience at the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay. Sadly, Mellony, one of the zoo’s beloved chimpanzees, has lost her newborn. True to their nature, chimpanzees mourn just as we do, and Mellony has been holding onto her little one.
Zoo staff are keeping a watchful eye on Mellony and her troop, giving them the space and time to grieve. They’re asking for your understanding if you’re planning to visit soon. Signs have been placed around the chimp area, and staff members are ready to answer any questions you might have. Making sure the chimps feel comfortable and supported is the zoo’s top priority right now.
Why keep the area open? The zoo believes that maintaining the troop’s routine helps more than sudden changes. Seeing visitors can be comforting for them—they’re used to it, and closing the area might bring unnecessary stress.
