The latest findings from the European Environment Agency have revealed some surprising places in Europe where you might want to think twice before taking a dip. While Cyprus boasts pristine waters with 100% of its bathing spots deemed superb, some other countries didn’t shine quite as brightly in the report.

Albania, despite its increasing popularity among holidaymakers from the UK, found less than 16% of its bathing spots rated as excellent, with 23% falling into the ‘poor’ category due to high levels of faecal bacteria. Yet, the allure of long beaches and budget-friendly accommodation continues to draw nearly a million Brits annually, lured by low-cost direct flights and a favourable exchange rate.

Joining the list of countries with room for improvement are Estonia, Poland, and the landlocked nation of Hungary, each having less than 65% of their swimming spots rated as excellent. Belgium also struggled, with only 67.9% meeting the required standards.

But don’t count Hungary out just yet! While it lacks a coastline, it’s home to the magnificent Lake Balaton, the largest freshwater lake in Europe. Clocking in at 600 square kilometres, with 200 km of shoreline, its waters are officially rated excellent for swimming. Just don’t expect crystal clear waters as its natural cloudiness comes from high plankton and mineral content.

For the curious travellers, there’s an interactive map from the EEA to check out if your favourite beach or lake is up to scratch.
