Exciting times for Welsh politics! 🎉 Former deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies has stepped into the spotlight as the new Llywydd (Presiding Officer) of the Senedd. Representing Afan Ogwr Rhondda, he was elected with a whopping 85 votes during the Senedd’s first meeting.

Top of his agenda? Overseeing the full Senedd meetings, maintaining fairness, and being the voice of the Senedd both in Wales and internationally. Alongside him, Plaid Cymru’s Kerry Ferguson scoops up the role of Deputy Presiding Officer.

In other big news, Rhun ap Iorwerth from Plaid Cymru is now Wales’ First Minister, marking a historic break from the Labour tradition since the dawn of devolution.
Irranca-Davies promises to collaborate with all members to keep the Senedd relevant and reflective of every corner of Wales. “I’ll ensure respect in our debates and uphold our democratic values,” he remarked.
Not everyone is celebrating, though. Conservative leader Darren Millar called the appointment a “stitch-up,” critiquing Labour and Plaid Cymru’s collaboration. He argues it sets a peculiar precedent and insists Irranca-Davies must earn his group’s respect.
