🔍 **Local Councillor Stirs Controversy Over Immigration Remarks!**

Cllr Gareth Roberts of Plaid Cymru has been temporarily suspended after his comments about immigration’s impact on the Welsh language sparked controversy. During a heated planning meeting about new housing in Chwilog, Cllr Roberts expressed concerns over Bangor’s shift from a Welsh-speaking area due to an influx of migrants.

He observed, “Bangor’s Welsh language population is diminishing. I grew up here, and I’ve seen the changes over the last five years.” He highlighted the challenges faced by local schools juggling an astounding 42 different languages among students, complicating the teaching of Welsh.
Roberts stressed the risk that new housing developments could reduce the proportion of Welsh speakers in the area. He voiced concerns over the future of the Welsh language in nearby villages and across the region, as people might be compelled to move from overcrowded Bangor.
Responding to the backlash, Plaid Cymru announced a probe after several complaints were received. While Cllr Roberts resigned from the party’s local group, he clarified his stance: “I support migration; Bangor’s multicultural identity is vital. We must ensure newcomers can learn Welsh properly and integrate effectively.”
Plaid Cymru advocates for the Welsh Government’s Nation of Sanctuary policy, aimed at supporting refugee integration. However, the party emphasises that the policy doesn’t alter immigration rules nor the number of asylum seekers in Wales.
