The call is out for more investment in Merthyr Tydfil’s grass-cutting teams, following a council meeting that highlighted the urgent need for resources. Councillor Geraint Thomas made an appeal to focus funds on manpower and equipment over communications, emphasising the need for visible results in our green spaces.

Today, the council operates with just 4 teams of three, a marked decrease from previous numbers. This downsizing impacts their ability to fully manage the green areas across the county, while still aiming to preserve biodiversity. With the enactment of the Environment Act (Wales) 2016, the council has had to rethink its approach, adopting a “differential mowing” strategy to balance ecological health with recreational needs.

🏞️ So, what does this mean for our parks and roadsides?

– Sporting and recreational areas still get top-notch mowing.
– Other areas, like embankments, are now allowed to thrive naturally, benefitting pollinators and small wildlife.
– Key sections along highways and footpaths receive a neat one-metre trim to maintain a tidy look.

Concerns were raised over leaving grass cuttings on-site, as this isn’t ideal for encouraging wildflowers or boosting the council’s recycling goals. Clr. Clive Jones pointed out the contradiction of uncollected grass hindering pollination and yet missing an opportunity to increase recycling figures.

Despite limited resources, the council has prioritised 20 sites as biodiversity hotspots. These areas are managed with special cut-and-collect methods twice a year to ensure wildflower areas are improved and carefully monitored for species diversity.

Councillor Paula Layton highlighted the importance of hitting biodiversity and recycling targets, insisting a deeper evaluation of resources is needed.
