🌟 Attention Merthyr Tydfil Residents! 🌟

Brace yourselves for some changes in the upcoming financial year. In a bid to tackle a looming multi-million-pound budget gap, Merthyr Tydfil Council has laid out its plans, and here’s what you need to know:

📈 **Council Tax Rise:** A proposed 4.95% bump in council tax is on the horizon. This means band D properties could see an increase of around £103.12 annually, translating to just £1.98 extra per week. If you’re in bands A to C, the rise will be even less, as these bands cover 84% of local properties.
💸 **Budget Adjustments:** The 2026/2027 budget is set at £183.69 million. While some budget cuts are in the pipeline, schools will NOT face additional efficiency demands, though they continue to grapple with financial pressures.
💼 **Funding Challenges:** The school funding remains tight, especially with rising costs related to additional learning needs. The final government settlement did soften the blow, providing a 4.7% funding bump which shrinks the budget gap by £7.74m.
📊 **Service Changes:** All services could see a 3.4% fee increase from April 2026, aligning with projected inflation rates. Cost-saving measures are still a focus, with a £325,000 target set for council-wide savings.
✨ **Community Support:** Projects affected by the transition from the Shared Prosperity Fund to the Local Growth Fund are getting a boost. A £532,000 package, partially funded by the council and Biffa Profit Share, is in place to support legacy initiatives.
We know these changes may be challenging, but they’re necessary steps to maintain vital services in our community. Keep an eye out for more updates and make sure to share your thoughts! How do you feel about these changes? 🌍💬
