Welsh parents, brace yourselves! A new report reveals that childcare expenses in Wales are now the highest in Great Britain. While some Welsh families access limited subsidised hours for young children, a charity’s survey highlights stark differences in childcare costs across the UK.

For a part-time nursery spot for children under two, parents in Wales are shelling out an average of £166.33 per week—an 8% hike compared to last year. Meanwhile, similar spots in Scotland and England are slightly more affordable. The report also notes increases in full-time childcare costs for three and four-year-olds across the UK, with Welsh families seeing a 6% rise.

Why the disparity? Interestingly, while England offers a 30-hour weekly entitlement for kids under three, Scottish and Welsh families haven’t experienced similar widespread reductions.
Afterschool clubs and childminders also add to the financial strain. Wales tops the after-school club cost chart, and while it’s cheaper for childminding than in Scotland, England still offers more favourable rates.
The underlying message? High childcare costs risk sidelining Welsh parents from the workforce. Many are calling for more affordable childcare to help parents stay in work and provide kids with early education opportunities.
The Welsh Government asserts its ongoing efforts, emphasising that its childcare programmes have made positive impacts, benefiting thousands of families and prioritising disadvantaged communities. Plans to expand access further are underway, with substantial funds already invested annually.
