Top Welsh Medical Expert Hits Back at Trump’s Paracetamol Claims

There’s been quite a stir recently following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks suggesting that pregnant women should avoid taking acetaminophen, better known as Tylenol in the U.S. and paracetamol in the UK. Trump claimed that using paracetamol during pregnancy might increase the risk of autism in children.

However, this has sparked a strong response from medical professionals, including Wales’ very own Chief Medical Officer, Professor Isabel Oliver. She firmly advises pregnant women to continue following NHS guidelines, which advocate for the careful use of paracetamol as a safe and effective method to relieve pain and fever when necessary.
Prof. Oliver stated, “There is no evidence linking paracetamol use during pregnancy to autism. In fact, untreated pain and fever can be much riskier for both mother and baby.”
Medical experts around the UK stand united in backing Prof. Oliver’s stance, reaffirming that paracetamol remains the safest choice of painkiller for expectant mothers when used as directed.
Backing the medical community, UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed his confidence in doctors, quipping, “I trust doctors over President Trump, frankly, on this.”
The issue even found its way into political debates, with Nigel Farage, during an LBC interview, unwilling to dismiss Trump’s claims outright. His reluctance to side with scientific consensus led to backlash, notably from Conservative MS Peter Fox, who criticised Farage’s contribution to unfounded conspiracy theories.
So, mums-to-be, rest assured that when it comes to pain relief, the experts have your back with paracetamol remaining a safe choice when used correctly. Always trust the science and your healthcare provider’s guidance!
