A beautiful bronze statue now stands proudly, capturing the essence of Rhodri Morgan, Wales’ first First Minister. Known as “the father of Welsh devolution,” Rhodri was a beloved figure who dedicated over 30 years to politics, leading Wales with passion and wit for a decade.
This heartfelt tribute to Rhodri, sculpted by the talented Andy Edwards, is uniquely placed at ground level to reflect his approachable nature and is located just metres away from the Senedd—a place he was instrumental in shaping. His family, friends, former colleagues, and admirers gathered to witness the unveiling in the glorious Cardiff sunshine, celebrating the man who made such an impact on our nation.
The statue features Rhodri in his signature casual attire, accompanied by his loyal dog, William Tell, reflecting his “unstuffy” approach to leadership. It serves not just as a memorial, but as a reminder of a modern Wales thriving under devolution—a cause he championed.
This project was funded entirely by donations from individuals and groups across Wales, a testament to the love and respect Rhodri commanded from all walks of life. Special thanks to everyone who contributed, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who performed the honour of unveiling the statue.
