🔍 **Attention, Parents and Teachers in Wales!** 🔍

There’s been a bit of a shake-up in some Welsh schools. An internal audit has uncovered that two supply teachers were working without up-to-date DBS checks in Anglesey schools. The DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks are crucial for ensuring that those working with children and vulnerable adults have a clean and recent criminal record check.
The findings came to light during a Governance and Audit Committee meeting, raising questions about the reliability of safeguarding measures when it comes to hiring supply teachers. While key safeguarding practices are present, there’s a call for more consistent safer-recruitment renewal checks and better tracking systems.

Head of Audit and Risk, Marion Pryor, clarified that while it’s rare someone would work without ever having a DBS, in these cases, checks simply expired without timely renewal—a wake-up call for the system!
Education chief Aaron C Evans stated they’re working on more robust systems to alert when a DBS needs renewing, aiming for a proactive approach to avoid such oversights in the future.
Committee members expressed their surprise at the lapse, with some calling for immediate action to ensure all schools are up to date. It’s vital for the safety of kids that these checks are consistently maintained.
