Transport for Wales has opted to keep these out due to space constraints, aiming to maximise passenger capacity. Instead, they’re rolling out new station facilities along the Treherbert, Aberdare, and Merthyr Tydfil routes, just in time for the summer service launch between Pontypridd and Cardiff Bay.

The new station facilities will be fully accessible, featuring wheelchair access, support rails, and even baby changing areas. 🚼

Why no onboard loos, you ask? TfW says it’s all about keeping the trains as spacious as possible, plus many UK systems operate just fine without them. However, this has stirred up a bit of chatter, particularly among families, elderly passengers, and those travelling late at night. Some rail workers have their concerns too.

Despite the loo-less dilemma, these sleek tram-trains are part of the larger South Wales Metro project, which promises swifter travel times, aiming for around 50-minute trips between key points with trains every 15 minutes. Powered by electricity and battery, these eco-friendly trains will zip you across both railways and streets, carrying over 250 passengers per three-car unit. ⚡️
