🦠 Urgent Update: Meningitis Alert in Wales 🚨

Tragic news has surfaced as two young lives have been lost to a meningitis outbreak linked to Kent. Calls are growing louder for an expansion of the MenB vaccine programme in Wales, following 29 reported cases in the area.
Health authorities are on high alert after meningitis cases were linked to two universities and several schools in Kent. This outbreak is believed to have started at a nightclub in Canterbury, with students queuing in droves to receive preventative antibiotics and the MenB vaccine. However, demand was so high that many were turned away due to capacity limits.

Public Health Wales (PHW) has confirmed five meningitis cases this year, with five related deaths over the past five years. With meningitis B vaccinations not generally available on the NHS for children over two or adults, there’s a push for change to make them more accessible.
For young people aged 13-14, the MenACWY vaccine is offered alongside their regular boosters, covering multiple strains of meningococcal bacteria. Catching up on missed vaccines is crucial, especially for those heading to college or university where close-contact infections can spread rapidly.
If you’re returning from Kent or have been in close contact with confirmed cases, additional precautions such as preventative antibiotics and vaccinations may be offered.

As the calls for wider vaccine access continue, stay informed and protect yourself and your loved ones. Meningitis can have devastating effects, but awareness and timely vaccination play a critical role in prevention. Stay safe, everyone! 💉❤️
