🚨 Bird flu alert in Pontyberem! 🚨

A bird flu outbreak has been detected in Pontyberem, Carmarthenshire, prompting the establishment of a 3km Avian Influenza Protection Zone and a 10km surveillance area. Animal health officers will be visiting all businesses, homes, and agricultural holdings within these zones to contain the spread of this concerning disease.

The Welsh Government declared these restrictions after identifying a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza in poultry. While this severe form of bird flu poses a very low risk to human health, it can lead to sudden death in birds.

Local authorities, including Carmarthenshire County Council, are urging all poultry and bird keepers within and outside the zones to adhere to enhanced biosecurity measures. Cllr Aled Vaughan Owen emphasised the importance of vigilance, stating, “This is a tough situation for the poultry keeper involved, but the risk to human health is extremely low. Please follow the guidelines to help protect our community.”
Furthermore, all of Wales is under mandatory housing measures for caged birds starting November 13, as a preventative step against the flu’s spread.
Let’s work together to keep our feathered friends and community safe! 🐔💪
