In a heartbreaking accident, Welsh woman Bethan Roper tragically lost her life when she leaned out of a moving train window in 2018. The train, bound for Bristol Temple Meads, was speeding at 75mph when a tree branch struck her. Bethan, just 28 years old, had been coming home from a festive day out in Bath.

The heartbreaking details emerged during an inquest, revealing she had a blood alcohol level nearly twice the drink-drive limit. This wasn’t the first incident of its kind. Back in 2016, a similar tragedy occurred in south London, prompting safety recommendations that sadly weren’t fully implemented by Great Western Railway (GWR).

Fast forward to now, GWR is facing a hefty fine of £1m plus additional costs for health and safety law breaches. The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) found that GWR’s risk assessment of droplight windows was neither suitable nor sufficient, leading to missed opportunities to prevent such incidents.

Post the tragedy, measures were tightened up across the rail industry. These droplight windows are now either removed or fitted with safety controls on all trains.

Richard Hines, ORR’s chief inspector, reminds us, “Bethan’s death was preventable. Train operators must act swiftly on safety recommendations to protect passengers.”

Let’s hope this tragic event leads to a future where passenger safety is prioritised, ensuring we never witness such a loss again. 💔🚆
