Rory McIlroy didn’t hold back at the Ryder Cup, blasting “unacceptable” crowd behaviour after an intense weekend at Bethpage Black. The Northern Irish golfer faced nasty heckling from the crowd throughout the three-day event and revealed that his wife, Erica, was hit by a beer can thrown by a spectator during the tense Saturday fourballs.

Despite these distractions, McIlroy kept his cool on the course, showing grit and determination. He passionately stated in a press conference, “I wish they had let the dogs off the leashes,” expressing his frustration at the abuse and commending the majority who were respectful fans. “Golf should be held to a higher standard,” he argued, underscoring that this kind of behaviour should never be part of the game.

Erica, unharmed but shaken, was praised by Masters champion McIlroy for her resilience, describing her as “a very strong woman” who handled the adversity with grace. Fellow golfer Shane Lowry was alongside the couple and noted the astonishing level of abuse Erica endured, yet applauded her support for McIlroy and Team Europe.
Amidst it all, McIlroy shone on the course, earning critical points for Europe, though he confessed to feeling exhausted after narrowly falling to Scottie Scheffler in the singles. Yet, Europe’s team triumphed with a 15-13 victory over the US, leading McIlroy to vow a night of celebratory gusto: “We did what we needed to do and we are going to celebrate like there is no tomorrow.”
Let’s hope future events focus on the sport itself, without the sideline distractions. Here’s to celebrating the positive and respectful spirit of golf! 🏌️♂️⛳️
