BBC Race Across the World winner Alfie Watts tackled Pen y Fan at 3am on Mother’s Day for an extraordinary cause! As an ambassador for Winston’s Wish, the UK’s pioneering bereavement charity for children and young people, Alfie’s hike was all about raising awareness for those coping with the loss of a mum, especially on such a poignant day.

Alfie knows the struggle all too well, having lost his mum at the tender age of five. Now, he’s using his platform to support others who find days like Mother’s Day particularly challenging. “These special days can be tough when you’re bereaved,” shares Alfie. “I want to stand with other young people waking up without their mums.”

The Hike for Hope led trekkers up to Pen y Fan’s summit under the early morning stars—a reflective contrast to the usual adrenaline rush of Alfie’s Race Across the World adventures. It’s not just about climbing peaks; it’s about the journey of healing and remembrance. “Grief is always in my rucksack,” he says. “But this climb is a chance to pause and reflect.”
With Winston’s Wish providing crucial support to bereaved young people up to 25 years old, Alfie’s commitment to raising funds and awareness is unwavering. “Helping young people find someone to talk to about their grief is vital,” he emphasises.
Cheers to Alfie and the whole team for shining a light on this important cause! 🌟 Want to know more about the incredible work of Winston’s Wish? Visit winstonswish.org.
