Imagine going on holiday with your loved one, only to return home alone. Jacqueline Timson, 69, faced this unimaginable situation when her husband, Colin, tragically passed away during their trip to Cape Verde.

Colin, a retired forklift driver, became ill just two days into their £2,000 two-week holiday at Riu Funana resort in July 2024. Despite their excitement about returning to a favourite destination, the trip quickly turned into a nightmare. Jacqueline recalls the hotel being far from the standard they’d experienced before, with undercooked food and questionable sanitary conditions.

Colin’s sudden illness escalated quickly, and he was soon taken to hospital. Jacqueline, also unwell, was devastated to learn of his death upon her visit the next day. The Cape Verdean authorities reported dehydration, severe anaemia, and septic shock from acute gastroenteritis as the cause.

Without adequate travel insurance, Jacqueline faced the heart-wrenching task of burying Colin in an unmarked grave, thousands of miles from home. “The hardest thing is not bringing his ashes back,” she shared, still grappling with the void his absence has left.

Sadly, the Timsons’ story isn’t isolated. Law firm Irwin Mitchell is representing over 2,500 individuals who reported falling ill in Cape Verde since summer 2022, including families of 10 others who also lost loved ones to gastric illnesses.

Another family, the Brownlies, faced a similar heartbreak. Laurence Brownlie, from Scotland, never returned from his holiday in Cape Verde, succumbing to a suspected heart attack. His family, plagued with questions about the resort’s conditions, now seek answers and justice.

These heartbreaking tales highlight the urgent need for better health standards in holiday hotspots. Our hearts go out to those affected, and we urge everyone to ensure they have the necessary support and insurance while travelling. ✈️❤️
