🏥 Big Changes at Swansea’s Mental Health Unit 🏥

Staff at a mental health unit in Swansea are raising concerns after a major shake-up! One of the wards at Cefn Coed Hospital’s £18.5 million Ysbryd y Coed unit is temporarily closing, reducing bed numbers from 78 to 58. This decision means female patients will move to a mixed-gender ward for the time being.

Staff say the changes were rushed, without their feedback or consultation, and worry it’s more about cutting costs than caring for patients. They’ve voiced concerns over the potential impact on patient dignity and safety due to the shift from same-sex to mixed-gender wards. Families of patients reportedly haven’t been informed either.
Despite these worries, Swansea Bay University Health Board insists the move is temporary. They’ve highlighted that their current bed capacity often exceeds demand and assure that Ysbryd y Coed will continue providing crucial care for older adults with complex mental health and dementia needs. They promise this adjustment is about clinical efficiency and not just financial savings, with all wards offering ensuite single bedrooms for privacy.
Llais Wales, a patient watchdog group, plans to meet with health board officials soon to better understand the decision-making process and ensure patient well-being. They’re eager to see clarity on the duration of these changes and their impact, especially concerning the transition to mixed-gender accommodation.
