A notorious offender, Mark Hawkes, has been firmly dealt with by Swansea Crown Court after being convicted of horrific crimes that have haunted a young boy for nearly two decades.

Hawkes, already behind bars for abusing a young girl, was found guilty of brutally raping and assaulting a young boy. The dreadful acts nearly “destroyed” the victim, bringing years of “mental torture”. Despite his denials, the jury saw through his lies and justice was served with a 16-year sentence. This new term will kick in after he finishes his current sentence, totalling 24 years in prison followed by a two-year extended licence.

Disturbingly, these crimes occurred in the Neath Port Talbot area, shortly after Hawkes was released for a different sexual offence. His past is littered with abuse charges, and his latest conviction ensures he remains a registered sex offender for life with a strict restriction on interacting with children.

The severity of his actions is reflected in his sentencing. Recorder Jonathan Rees KC acknowledged the “harrowing” evidence that detailed the victim’s suffering, commending the victim’s bravery for coming forward.
