Swansea’s teenage tennis star, Mimi Xu, has showcased her incredible talent at Wimbledon despite a tough first-round defeat. Facing off against Australia’s former world number 8, Daria Kasatkina, Mimi battled fiercely and even managed to win a set. From losing the first set 6-2, she bounced back brilliantly to take the second 6-3, injecting a thrilling atmosphere into the match. Kasatkina’s experience shone through in the final set, but Mimi’s performance left her feeling proud and more determined than ever.

Reflecting on the match, Mimi said, “I’m proud of myself for bouncing back from the first set. I fought well and I’m learning from each experience.” Having faced off against Emma Raducanu in last year’s first round, Mimi felt more composed and excited this time around, soaking up the electric atmosphere created by a passionate crowd.

But the action doesn’t stop here for Mimi! She’s teaming up with fellow Brit Alicia Dudeney for the women’s doubles. The duo is gearing up to take on the 2023 French Open doubles champions, Hsieh Su-Wei and Wang Xinyu. Mimi is excited, saying, “It’s our third tournament together, and we’re ready to embrace every moment against some experienced players.”
Elsewhere at Wimbledon, there was a surprising exit for British number one Cameron Norrie, who was defeated in a five-set thriller by American qualifier Michael Zheng. Despite starting strong, Norrie struggled to maintain his momentum, ultimately losing in a final-set tie-break.
Meanwhile, defending champion Jannik Sinner overcame a challenging match against Miomir Kecmanovic, battling through in five sets. Despite some hiccups, including a slip and a blood-stained trainer, Sinner’s resilience and 31 aces powered him into the next round. It’s clear that Wimbledon is delivering all the drama and excitement we’ve come to expect from this iconic tennis tournament! πΎπ
